Content: Ha Long Bay has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While mythology tells how dragons saved the Vietnamese from a fleet of invaders by dropping pearls which turned into a chain of inshore islands, the islands' actual story is hinted at by the remains of several prehistoric cultures found in the region. Sphinx Rock is another name for Dai Nguoi ("Human Head") Island, while Sung Sot ("Surprise Grotto") is the name given to the spectacular complex of caves found under the island of Bo Hon.
