Notes
Content: "They are coaling at Nagasaki and this is done by a human chain of women, passing baskets of coal from one to another until the woman at the top step empties the coal into the shute [chute] & throws the basket back into the big flat boat which is filled with coal--these boats extend the whole length of the ship on each side. It is a weird and strange sight--L.M.B."--handwritten verso note on another postcard (image ID 4044142) mailed from Tsingtau (Qingdao), November 1, 1920, to "Mrs Thomas Bouten [Bouden?], 48 Hawthorne Place, Montclair, New Jersey, U.S.A." In 1920 Tsingtao was under Japanese rule.
