Description
The enemy keep their position extending from the west side of the Ashley towards Eddisto; their force is over 2,500 men, exclusive of militia; they expect 500 more to complete the Virginia Line, with Lauzun's Legion; he thinks Gen. Greene has sent Col. Lee to induce the sending of a larger body of French troops; there is a prospect of filling up the South Carolina line, which was nearly annihilated; the enemy are attempting this in North Carolina at a bounty of three negroes for each recruit; he has made frequent excursions of cavalry to distress the rebels; a despatch from the Commander-in-chief ordered 2,000 men from here; he referred it to a board of officers, and will delay complying with it until His Excellency shall have considered their unanimous opinion against it; every encouragement should be given to the export of provisions to this place, as the enemy seek to force the inhabitants, through want, to relinquish the British cause.
