Content: Video documentation of the festival The early years: American modern dance from 1900 through the 1930s, hosted by SUNY College at Purchase, New York, on April 9-12, 1981, under the sponsorship of State University of New York, University-Wide Programs in the Arts. Festival director: Patricia Kerr Ross. Video producer: Daniel Labeille.
Content: Videotaped on April 11, 1981 by D. A. Pennebaker. Presentation titled The contributions of Hanya Holm to American modern dance: A dialogue between Holm and Valerie Bettis. Introduction by Patricia Kerr Ross. Holm discusses the state of dance in Germany during her youth, noting the influence of Rudolf Laban's scientific approach to movement. She reminisces about studying and dancing with Mary Wigman. In recounting her experiences as performer, choreographer, and teacher in the U.S., she touches upon her work in New York at the Wigman School, in her own studio, and on Broadway, and her recent activities in Colorado Springs. Bettis contributes her own reminiscences of studying and performing with Holm. A question-and-answer period follows the presentation. Occasional gaps in recording.
