Description
Acknowledging letters of the 11th and 16th ult.; the latter came by Gen. Stephens [Edward Stevens?]; the requests of both have been attended to; has not answered sooner because of frail health; peace in Europe; probability that internal tranquillity will not be disturbed, notwithstanding the menacing tone of Congress; devastation in San Domingo; cannot visit Gates, as he has his farm to look after in times of relaxation; returns the letter from Gen. [John] Armstrong; it is fortunate that he has so good a successor; regards to Mrs. Gates.
