DescriptionFourth of a five-part series. History of American modern dance, beginning with the work of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn at the Denishawn School. The program explores the technical and choreographic innovations of Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey, both Denishawn products, and their successors Erick Hawkins and José Limón. The influence of German modern dance, brought to the U.S. by Hanya Holm, and of contemporary developments in American art, cinema, and popular dance are also discussed; for example, the affinity of Abstract Expression and Alwin Nikolais's works is examined. Also discussed are Merce Cunningham's collaboration with composer John Cage; the choreography of Alvin Ailey and Paul Taylor; the iconoclastic performances of Judson Dance Theater; and minimalism in dance, as represented by the choreography of Steve Paxton, Lucinda Childs, and Trisha Brown.
