DescriptionDocumentary on Kutiyattam, an ancient Indian dance-theater form that combines dance, pantomime, singing, music, and the declamation of verses in Sanskrit. Performance footage depicting episodes from the Ramayana, filmed in the Kuttambalam (a special theater pavilion in the temple complex), alternate with scenes of the actors' preparations: applying make-up in green, red, and other colors, each with symbolic significance; donning costumes; and rehearsing. The performances are preceded by rituals that reinforce the religious nature of the plays. The wide range of characters represented by the actors include the god Rama (an avatar of Vishnu) and his wife Sita; the monkeys Bali, Sugriva, and Hanuman; and the demon king Ravana. This documentary was entered in the Grand Prix International Vidéo Danse.
