Scott Douglas speaks with Theresa Bowers about his background; his first professional engagements as a dancer including on the Orpheum circuit; his dance training during and after his military service, with William Christensen, Lester Horton, and Ruth St. Denis; his time with the San Francisco Ballet including an anecdote about Adolph Bolm; joining Ballet Theatre [later American Ballet Theatre] and dancing on the European tour; briefly, working with Antony Tudor; dancers including Igor Youskevitch, Nora Kaye, and Hugh Laing as coaches; some of his roles; his foot injury and recovery; his beginning to dance lead roles, on the South American tour; how he learns a role; more on Antony Tudor; Agnes de Mille; Jerome Robbins; his regret that he never worked with Martha Graham including an anecdote about Graham; John Butler.
