Description
Prints after oil paintings by Jean Léon Gérôme. Recreation in the camp, also known by the titles Récréation au camp (Souvenir de Moldavie) or A Russian concert, was painted in 1854 and exhibited at the Exposition universelle in Paris in 1855. It depicts a circle of men in heavy coats, some of them playing musical instruments. The scene takes place in a bleak landscape, with silhouetted buildings in the distance and a V-shaped formation of birds in the sky. La danse du sabre, in contrast, is set in a lavishly decorated Islamic-style interior, where a belly dancer balances a sword on her head as part of her performance. She is accompanied by a group of musicians at right, while an impassive audience of men (and an ape) watch from the opposite side.
