DescriptionFirst of a five-part series. Historical overview of classical ballet in Europe in the 20th century, presenting major personalities, dance companies, and dance works in relation to social, political, and cultural events of the time. Archival footage and contemporary performances are used to illustrate dance works. The program begins by examining classical ballet in Russia, as exemplified by the works of Marius Petipa, then traces its importation to western Europe by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, represented through the choreography of Michel Fokine, Vaslav Nijinsky, Léonide Massine, Bronislava Nijinska, and George Balanchine. The evolution of European ballet after Diaghilev's death is traced through Serge Lifar and the Paris Opéra Ballet; the work of Marie Rambert, Frederick Ashton, Ninette de Valois, and Antony Tudor in Britain; and finally the choreography of Roland Petit and Maurice Béjart. The program also looks at Isadora Duncan's influence on Fokine; the contribution of Dalcroze eurythmics; and the Ballets Suédois and its circle of collaborators, including filmmaker René Clair.
