Notes
Biographical/historical: "Thoreau wrote of this 1856 daguerreotype by Benjamin Maxham: 'my friends think [it] is pretty good though better looking than I.' His friend Horace Hosmer thought it the best likeness of Thoreau he had ever seen. It was made at the request of an admirer apparently unknown to Thoreau, who mailed him $5 in June 1856, with a request for two of his books and a daguerreotype of himself."
