Philippe [also known as Philip, Philipp or Philips] Galle was a draughtsman, engraver, writer, publisher, and print dealer based in Antwerp. His son Theodor Galle was also an engraver, publisher, and print dealer. The Dutch painter Maarten van Heemskerck [there are many variant spellings of his name] made drawings for some six hundred prints. His subjects, frequently drawn from the Bible, displayed his flair for original compositions.

DescriptionScene from the Biblical story of the prodigal son. In the foreground, a butcher prepares a carcass, possibly symbolizing the "fatted calf" of the parable's celebratory feast. In the middle ground at right, the prodigal son dances in a circle with his family, rejoicing in his return. They wear contemporary finery rather than biblical robes.
