Biographical/historical: This print is part of a series depicting different scenes from the story of the prodigal son. Philippe [also known as Philip, Philipp or Philips] Galle was a draughtsman, engraver, writer, publisher, and print dealer based in Antwerp. His son Theodor Galle was also an engraver, publisher, and print dealer. The Dutch painter Maarten van Heemskerck [there are many variant spellings of his name] made drawings for some six hundred prints. His subjects, frequently drawn from the Bible, displayed his flair for original compositions.

Extent: 1 print : engraving, b&w ; 23 x 28 cm.
Description
Scene from the Biblical story of the prodigal son. In the foreground, a butcher prepares a carcass, possibly symbolizing the "fatted calf" of the parable's celebratory feast. In the middle ground at right, the prodigal son dances in a circle with his family, rejoicing in his return. They wear contemporary finery rather than biblical robes.
