Description
The panelists reminisce about beginning their careers and striking out on their own. Recalling the American dance scene of the 1930s and 40s, they discuss the Neighborhood Playhouse, Denishawn, Martha Graham and her company, Hanya Holm, Louis Horst, Helen Tamiris, Doris Humphrey, and Merce Cunningham, and general subjects such as themes for dance, economic survival, composers for modern dance, and the expansion of modern dance technique. Members of the audience, many of them students of New York University, contribute to a discussion covering topics such as the present-day challenges of a career in modern dance, the need for guidance vs. self-sufficiency, and dance in the university system.
