Biographical/historical: Maritana, a grand opera in three acts (music, William Vincent Wallace; libretto, Edward Fitzball after the drama Don Cesar de Bazan, by Philippe d'Ennery and Philippe Francois Pinel Dumanoir) was first performed at the Drury Lane Theatre, London, in 1845. Set in seventeenth-century Spain, its plot placed the Gypsy heroine Maritana at the center of an intrigue against Charles II, the king of Spain. This lithograph depicts a moment from Act I, scene 1, which is set in a square in Madrid.
