Description
The 1st part of the recording is about the New York City Opera and its new production of "The Music man." Beverly Sills, a noted soprano and the general director of the company, with some comments from the music administrator Donald Hazard, discusses the challenges opera singers tackle when they perform in musicals and have to deal with the technique of both singing and speaking on stage, and in view of that, the qualities she is looking for in artists. Two performers in the show, Stanley Wexler and Leigh Munro, participate in the discussion and provide live studio performance with other 4 singers who are not in the show. Included are announcements of cultural events in New York and the program of the upcoming season at the New York City Opera. The following are musical excerpts from the "Music man": "Ya got trouble" performed by Wexler; "Till there was you" performed by Munro; "Sincere" performed by barbershop quartet; "The sadder but wiser girl" performed by Wexler; and "Lida Rose" and "Will I ever tell you" performed by all. The 2nd part is a conversation with Elmar Oliveira, a renowned violinist with some short commentary from Doris Stevenson, pianist, intercut with live studio performances of Sonata in A major by Vivaldi, Rondo capriccioso by Saint-Saëns, March from The love for three oranges transcribed by Jascha Heifetz, and Banjo and fiddle by Kroll, all except the last work that is composed for violin and piano, arranged for these instruments. Oliveira discusses unparalleled superiority of Stradivarius and Guarneri violins, and recounts his exposure and studies of music that resulted in winning the Gold Medal at Moscow's Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1978 in an atmosphere of aggressive Russian nationalism that brought him international recognition and popularity.
