NotesStatement of responsibility: musique de Mr. Mr. [sic] Pugni et St. Leon; pour le piano par L. Messemaekers [sic].Caption title.Pl. no. : 10124.At top of score: "Arrangée pour le piano par L. Messemaeckers." The correct spelling of the arranger's name, Messemaekers or Messemaeckers, has not been confirmed.Biographical/historical: The ballet La vivandière (choreography, Fanny Cerrito and Arthur Saint-Léon; music, Cesare Pugni) was first performed at Her Majesty's Theatre, London, in 1844. Cerrito danced the role of Kathi, the vivandière of the title (a term signifying a sutler, or civilian provisioner to an army), with Saint-Léon, soon to become her real-life husband, as her sweetheart Hans. This print probably depicts the two at a climactic moment in the ballet, when Hans mistakenly believes that Kathi has been flirting with two other men.
