Citation/reference: Centenary Edition, XVI, The Letters 1843-1853, p.481, #508. The CE text is taken from version printed in magazine The Century XLVII (November, 1894), 93-94, and editors state that the source for this was "probably a transcript of [N.H.'s] draft by SH included in a letter to Elizabeth P. Peabody, now unknown". This is appears to be the conjectured transcript. Another version of the letter was published in Rose Hawthorne Lathrop's Memories of Hawthorne (1897), 163-67. The CE rejects most variant readings from Memories, but all of these reflect the letter as copied in this transcript.
