Description
Washington Irving was one of America's first best-selling authors, and is remembered today for such tales as "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The write was the toast of London when his artist-friend Charles Leslie painted him in 1820. The two men first became acquainted in 1815, and remained close friends for more than a decade. Although Leslie was born in England, he was raised in Philadelphia, but returned to his native land as sixteen to study painting. A talented portrait, history and genre painter, Leslie was elected a member of the prestigious Royal Academy in 1821. Washington Irving also spent many years abroad, but retired permanently to his estate, Sunnyside, located on the Hudson River above New York City, in 1846. Irving was a close friend of John Jacob Astor and his Astoria (1836) was a history of the millionaire's Pacific Fur Company. Washington Irving was appointed to the board of the Astor Library in Astor's will, and he served as the library's first president until his death.
