CONTENTS: 1: Lecture (approx. 36 min.) by Arlene Croce, who explores links between Stravinsky's score and aesthetic theories of the past, particularly those of the ancient Greeks, the Renaissance, and the Romantics: theories of correspondences, the notion of music as celestial harmony, and the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk. She analyzes the score in terms of number symbolism and notes choreographic references to symbols embedded in the score. She also discusses Apollo's role in elevating music and dance in the artistic hierarchy of the Ballets Russes, Stravinsky's choice of the Apollonian rather the Dionysian mode, and Vera Stravinsky's creative influence. -- Presentation (approx. 22 min.) by Croce and Christopher O'Riley. Musical examples are played by O'Riley at the piano to illustrate an analysis of Apollo's musical structure, particularly its rhythms and harmony. Topics include the score's allusions to the French Baroque music of Rameau and Lully, and to Tchaikovsky's The sleeping beauty and the song None but the lonely heart; the appearance of jazz syncopation in the score, and its adaptation of poetic meters; and examples of its economy and precision. -- 2: Conclusion of the presentation (approx. 24 min.). O'Riley plays an uninterrupted excerpt from the score, beginning with Apollo's second solo and continuing until the apotheosis. Question-and-answer period.
