Description
When John Tenniel (English, 1820-1914) illustrated Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass (1872), the published illustrations were deemed unsatisfactory by both Carroll and Tenniel, with much of the detail and refinement of the original drawings lost in the mechanical printing process. This volume contains the only complete set of Tenniel's final proofs of the original drawings, each proof inserted opposite its corresponding published illustration and signed by both the artist and engraver. The proofs were engraved individually by the Dalziel Brothers, printed directly from the woodblocks on thin India paper. They were created possibly as late as 1898, after Carroll’s own set was burned in a fire that year.
