Content: Light foxing around edges and along center fold. Written under image: "Triptolemus seated in his winged chariot drawn by two dragons is crowned with myrtle or laurel. He holds a sceptre and a phial into which Ceres pours the cyceon from an oenochoe. Ceres wears a cecryphale over her hair and holds blades of wheat with root on them. Proserpine holds a wreath which she is about to place on a fluted stele as an offering to Triptolemus. A palm tree is at either end. Louvre."
Content: Triptolemus was a person, favored by the gods, who taught the arts of agriculture to humankind. The "dragons" which pulled his chariot are pictured here as snakes curved between the wheels and body of the car. A "phial" was a flat, saucer-like drinking cup. "Cyceon" was a festive or sacrificial drink mixed from such ingredients as wine, honey, flowered water and cheese. An "oenochoe" was a pitcher used to transfer wine from a large bowl into drinking cups. A "cecryphale" was a head-wrap worn by ancient Greek women. A "stele" was a small monument, usually shaped like a pillar or a stone slab.
