"Onyx stone, time of Augustus"--written on border.
Description
Cameo of onyx depicting Roman military victories over peoples of the northern frontier of the empire. On the upper level, Augustus is shown enthroned as Jupiter, attended by Roma, Oikoumene, Oceanus and Italia; Tiberius, the supreme commander of Roman forces and Augustus' successor, descends from a chariot accompanied by Victory. On the lower level, Roman soldier erect a trophy to which captives will be tied.
