Notes
Content: Satyrs (bearded, naked male deities with tails) and bacchantes (female worshippers of Bacchus, god of wine) frolic in the two picture strips of this crater. A crater was a large vessel used to blend water and wine before the mixture was served out in smaller cups.
Content: Small image at lower left shows the vase as a whole.
Content: These people and creatures would have been referred to as a "thiasus", a group assembled in honor of a god. The satyrs carry wine cups, while some of the bacchantes hold a "thyrsus", a staff symbolic of Bacchus and topped with what looks like a pine cone. One of the bacchantes plays a lyre.
