Content: Eleusis is a small town near Athens. Triptolemus was a mythical "culture hero" who taught mankind the arts of agriculture. A libation is a sacrifice made by pouring liquid, usually wine, onto an altar or the ground. "Talaric" means "reaching to the ankles", while a "cecryphale" was a sort of combination bonnet and kerchief worn by ancient Greek women.
Content: Written below image: "Celeus, king of Eleusis, father of Triptolemus, stands between two altars and makes a libation. He holds a sceptre, [and is] assisted by his two daughters. They wear talaric tunics and cecryphales cover their hair. A palm tree is at right. Louvre."
