Description
Rendering of the Colossus of Rhodes is based on an earlier illustration by the Austrian architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in his history of architecture, published in Vienna in 1721. However, it would have been technically impossible for the Colossus to stand with one foot on each side of the harbor entrance. The statue of Artemis Ephesia represents a mother goddess. She may have many breasts, or they may be palm-dates, acorns, eggplant, bags to hold amulets or other decorations. Zeus holds a figure of Victory in his left hand, and a scepter capped with an eagle in his right hand.
