Description
One of a series of postcards illustrating activities in the Roman fort of Saalburg on the Empire's frontier with Germany. Roman legionaries prepare to fire a ballista (dart-throwing engine like a huge crossbow) from the wall of their fort. The soldier at the rear holds the line attached to the trigger, the man in front of him carries a dart and one of the levers used to crank back the firing mechanism, while the legionary in front readies more ammunition. The stooping and crouching poses of the Romans suggests that they are under attack and seeking cover.
