Description
"Holland abounds in curious customs, which differ in various localities. In the neighbourhood of Edam, a little town in North Holland, the farmers mount their sleighs on wheels in summer and use these vehicles for ceremonial occasions, notable when a marriage is celebrated. Our illustation shows two married couples returning from church on these mounted sleighs, which are generally of great age, and are elaborately carved and painted. It will be observed that while the women are conservative enough to wear the old Dutch head-dress, they make a concession to fashion on such occasions by placing a modern hat on top of it and thus ruin their otherwise artistic costume."--printed on border.
