Description
"The joyfulness of the occasion is expressed in the merry groups of men and maidens, and in the fresh young face of the bridegroom, the victor of the scene bearing his trophy away with him. Its pathos is equally well rendered in the timid, shrinking figure of the bride, who drops a tear for those she leaves, at the same time she pillows her head on her lover's shoulder. The painting brings in all the appropriate elements of the scene—the weeping mother, the quiet, sustained father, and even the laughing children on the wall, finding only idle pleasure in marriage and giving in marriage."--from source text.
