Content: Printed on border: "At the conclusion of a long statement, which amounted to little but an asseveration of his conviction of the guilt of the accused, General Mercier said, 'If the smallest doubt had crossed my mind, gentlemen, I should be the first to tell you, and to say before you to Dreyfus (turning towards the prisoner), 'I have been mistaken in good faith.' On hearing these words Captain Dreyfus suddenly rose, pale with anger, and made as if he were going to throw himself on the witness…Raising his fist, he cried, 'That is what you ought to say." Written on border: "8.19.99" Includes additional text.
