Description
“Fleeing Dacian cavalry pursued by the Romans; many of them fell (from their horses) and were killed on the ground.” A scene from Roman Emperor Trajan’s conquest of Dacia (modern Romania), as memorialized on Trajan’s Column, a pillar in Rome covered by a long spiral relief showing scenes from the war. The conquest of Dacia (101-106 AD) was one of the last seizures of territory by the Roman Empire, and is remembered as much for the skill and valor of the native resistance as for the triumph of the victors. "Bas-relief, Trajan's column, Rome, 113-114 A.D." "Engr., early 18th cen."--written on border.
