Description
Mamelukes were a prestigious class of warriors in the Islamic Middle East who were also, surprisingly, slaves. Starting as just soldiers, they evolved into a hybrid class of fighters and administrators. By the end of their existence in the late 1700s -- early 1800’s, they had become rich and corrupt, and were often more about show than military skills. The richly-decorated, elaborate armor and weapons that were their pride are well illustrated in this picture. The Mamelukes proved their reckless courage, as well as their powerlessness against modern firepower, when they fought Napoleon’s Republican French army at the battles of the Pyramids and Aboukir in Egypt in 1799. Thousands of Mamelukes died, and their weapons and armor became spoils for the French victors.
