Notes
Content: Illustration of the poem "Het Spaens Heydinnetje" by Jacob Cats, which tells the story of Pretiose, a Spanish girl of noble birth who is kidnapped by a gypsy woman and raised without knowledge of her true identity. She grows to be a beautiful woman and meets a nobleman who falls in love with her. She is eventually reunited with her parents and marries the nobleman. The scene depicts the moment of encounter between the nobleman Don Juan, Pretiose and the aged gypsy Majombe. Based on Miguel de Cervantes’s novella "La Gitanilla di Madril."
