Petty, of Chicago, left, who headed the first contingent of Negro Army nurses to arrive in the European war theater, is shown here while on duty as Chief Nurse at Ft. Huachuca, before her assignment overseas. Assisting her in inspecting an operating room at the camp hospital is 2nd Lt. Olive Bishop, of New York. Both nurses were recruited for Army duty by the American Red Cross, official nurse recruiting agency for the Army."
