Biographical/historical: The opera Masaniello, ou La muette de Portici (music, Daniel Auber; libretto, Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne) was first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1828, and enjoyed enormous popularity during the nineteenth century for its revolutionary sentiments.

Description
Sheet music cover illustration of a scene from Daniel Auber's opera Masaniello. A man and a woman flee, with anxious looks over their shoulders, from shadowy figures behind them, one of whom bears a sword. The man wears a Phrygian cap, symbol of liberty, and carries a dagger; he is barefooted and wears a shirt, breeches rolled up to mid-thigh, and a cloak.
