Caption title.
Date: The date 1817 appears on the Cyrillic inscription on the entablature.
Funding: Purchased with funds from the Committee for the Jerome Robbins Dance Division.
Acquisition: Purchase; Victoria Tennant, 2011.
Biographical/historical: The Bolshoi Theatre has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. This print may be a conjectural view of the building designed by Joseph Bové, the architect who supervised the reconstruction of Moscow after the devastating fire of 1812 during the Napoleonic War. Its proportions are different from the structure that was actually built, but its components are the same, including the neoclassical façade with its eight Ionic columns supporting an entablature and pediment.
