Statement of responsibility: Signed on stone: A. Edel.
Biographical/historical: As indicated by their publication place and date, these designs may have been created for the ballet's production at the Teatro Apollo in Rome during the carnival-Lenten season of 1885-1886. The ballet, danced to music by Paolo Giorza, had previously been presented in Turin. A production at La Scala, Milan, in 1891-1892 was performed in costumes designed by Luigi Zamperoni. Rodope was based on a story that has been called the oldest literary archetype of the Cinderella story, in which the slave girl or courtesan Rodope (Rhodope in Greek) ultimately marries the Egyptian pharaoh.
Biographical/historical: Alfredo Edel, an Italian-born costume designer and illustrator, came from an artistic family of Alsatian roots. He designed numerous costumes for La Scala in Milan, including those for Luigi Manzotti's ballets Excelsior and Amor. He also worked in England, France, and the United States for performers ranging from the Comédie française to P.T. Barnum.
