Citation/reference: The print from L'Artiste is embossed with the words "L'Artiste hte Delz [?]" at lower left.
Acquisition: Gift; Lincoln Kirstein.
Biographical/historical: Paul Gavarni, whose real name was Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier, was an illustrator and caricaturist whose early works commented on the vagaries of Parisian society. His later works grew darker and deeper as his vision expanded to include a wider range of human emotions and proclivities.
Biographical/historical: The illustrated journal L'Artiste was published weekly in Paris from 1831 to 1904.
