Biographical/historical: Despite its title, which seems to refer to the Wilis of Jean Coralli's ballet Giselle, the ghostly and vengeful maidens who died before their weddings, this print actually predates Giselle, which was not created until 1841. It may have been inspired by a theatrical production, or intended as a satire of such a production.

Description
In a scene worthy of modern-day Halloween excesses, a young woman with long loose hair, wearing in a knee-length dress that suggests a theatrical costume rather than everyday apparel, stands on her toes as she raises her left hand to her ear, as though straining to hear a sound or voice. In her right hand is a tambourine. She is surrounded by all manner of eerie and mysterious folk: a batlike figure playing a violin; a dour female drummer; a black cat; the ghostly head of a bearded man rising from the earth; a midget in eighteenth-century dress, who aims his rapier at her skirt; a bespectacled dog on his hind legs, playing the triangle. In the background is a chorus line of skeletons and spectral figures; a full moon illuminates all. Inscriptions in Greek letters are written on the arch above the scene.
