Edgar Degas's images of the ballet often included the shadowy figures of these men, clad in their black evening clothes and opera hats. The French artist Alfred Grévin was a seasoned observer of activities behind the scenes, for in addition to his caricatures of contemporary Parisian life he designed costumes for the popular theatre of Paris, including ballets, comic operas, and plays. In addition to Petit journal pour rire, his caricatures were published in the periodicals Gaulois, Journal amusant, and Le Charivari.
