Stanley Sussman speaks with Katy Matheson about touring with the Martha Graham Dance Company in Japan; company morale; the repertoire; casting including the end of the so-called star system; Martha Graham's deep involvement with the costumes; rehearsals; Pearl Lang and her relationship with Graham; the departure of Ross Bertram and Mary Hinkson from the company [beginning of July 26 session, at approximately 50:29 minutes]; Sussman speaks about Graham's approach to creating a new work; Graham's remarks to him about her marriage to Erick Hawkins and other personal matters; Graham's approach to music and phrasing, as for example in her Diversion of angels; her choice of music including her frequent use of commissioned works; composers with whom he worked; Graham's work Dancing ground; how various company members interacted with Graham; her works Cortege of eagles; Acrobats of god; and Adorations [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2].
