The collection of photographs covers a wide range of dance forms from different ethnic and linguistic groups throughout the Indonesian archipelago; however, there is some emphasis on the islands of Java and Bali. Also, field notes and sketches document dances, costumes and musical instruments of various tribes on the island of Alor. In addition to dance and dance-related subjects, the collection also contains a sizable number of photographs of ancient Hindu and Buddhist architecture and sculpture, principally from Java.

Biographical/historical: The photographs were chiefly taken by scholar Claire Holt (1901-1970) during her visits to Indonesia in 1930-1938, 1955-1957, and 1969 to visually document the plastic and performing arts for her research. A number of these photographs were published in Holt's books Dance quest in the Celebes (1939), Art in Indonesia (1967), and the exhibition catalogue, Théâtre et danses aux Indes néerlandaises (1939).
