Biographical/historical: The Jardin Mabille, also called the Bal Mabille, was a pleasure garden on the Avenue Montaigne in Paris. First opened in 1840 by the eponymous Charles Mabille, it was the site of public dances as well as dance exhibitions, the latter often featuring the polka or the cancan.
