Biographical/historical: Illustration to the story The minuet de la cour : a tale of the French Revolution, from the book Read's Characteristic national dances, published in London in 1853. The thirteen stories in the book were each accompanied by an illustration of characters in national costumes.

Depiction of a man and a woman dancing beneath a domed ceiling of an elegantly appointed room, with a view of a vaulted portico leading through a garden to a distant fountain. They are surrounded by other ladies and gentlemen, none of whom pay any attention to the dance. Musicians accompany them from a gallery.
