Content: Includes the following verse: Qu'on ne nous parle plus d'Orphée, / par toy fameux LULLY sa gloire est etoufée. / Si de la Lyre et de la voix / La fable vente en luy les rares avantages, / Qu'a t'il fait qui ne cede a les divins Ouvrages / Qui charment le plus grand des Roys.
Biographical/historical: The Italian-born composer, instrumentalist, and dancer Jean-Baptiste Lully worked in the court of Louis XIV of France, "le plus grand des Roys" alluded to in the verse on this print. He composed numerous ballets, some of which were danced by the king, as well as operas and comédie-ballets, the latter devised in collaboration with the playwright Molière.

Half-length portrait of Jean-Baptiste Lully, holding a rolled music score. Below the portrait are two medallions: at left, a male nude watches a sunrise, with the Latin words "Ut aspicit excitat" in the frame; at right, the words "Nil mortale canit" frame the image of a lyre.
