NotesVenue: Videotaped at Trashiyangtze Dzong, in Trashiyangtze, Bhutan (Chorten Kora hilltop overlooking Chorten Kora), on Mar. 10, 2005.Acquisition: Gift; Core of Culture. NN-PDBiographical/historical: The Chorten Kora was built in Nepalese style based on the model of the Boudhanath stupa in Nepal by Lama Ngawang Loday in 1740. The main statue in the temple is of Guru Rinpoche. It is said that an eight year old girl from Arunachal Pradesh was sacrificed here when she entered the stupa and was immured during its construction. In her memory, the people of Arunachal Pradesh still visit every year for kora (circumambulation) during the great religious festival that is held in mid-March. Also masses of people from all parts of the eastern region come to mark these celebrations, particularly from the valleys of Merak Sakten.

DescriptionOverview of people circumambulating chorten kora - early to mid morning.
There are two main festivals that take place at the Chorten: the Dakpe Kora on the 15th day of the First Lunar month, which sees the circumambulation of the Chorten by the Dakpe people from Tawang, in memory of the eight-year old girl from that place who is said to have offered herself as a sacrifice, and the Drukpe Kora on the 30th day of the First Month which sees the circumambulation of the Chorten by thousands of Bhutanese pilgrims to the site.
