DescriptionDocumentary on the life and work of composer John Cage. His contributions to twentieth-century music are assessed, particularly his invention of the prepared piano, use of chance as a compositional tool, and collaboration with choreographer Merce Cunningham. Commentators include John Rockwell, Richard Kostelanetz, Yoko Ono, Calvin Tomkins, Laurie Anderson, Leo Castelli, and David Tudor. Cage, Cunningham, and artist Robert Rauschenberg also comment directly upon their work.
