Description
The first 4 minutes of the recording is a report on the bestowment of the award of excellence and the inclusion of 2 new members into The American Academy of Arts and Letters, Norman Mailer and Erskine Caldwell who inherited the chairs of Tennessee Williams and Lillian Hellman. Reporters and commentators on this event and the nature and composition of the Academy are Andy Lyman, Margaret Mills, and John Kenneth Galbraith. This celebration, according to New York Times, took place on December 7, 1984. However, the rest of the program is dated May 15, 1985 and covers current events consistent with that day. Other topics include reading of an excerpt from the novelist Ellen Gilchrist's memoir, weather coverage in Midwest, psychology of choking in sports by athletes, and political and economic overview of Brazil by Robert Tyrer, Latin American correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation.
