Description
A Q&A following a performance of the pieces 'Eyespace' and 'Crises' at New York's Joyce Theater by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Participants include choreoographer/dancer Merce Cunningham, MCDC archivist David Vaughan, and moderator/Director of Education at the Joyce, Joanne Robinson Hill. The music for the first piece, Eyespace', was loaded onto IPods, allowing each audience member to select the section of the score they'd hear at any given time during the dance. Cunningham begins by discussing the process of creating the dance for a piece structured in this way. (2:00) He then responds to a question regarding the use of the Dance Forms computer software in choreographing this dance. (3:45) An audience member asks a question regarding the growth in size of the Cunningham dance corps since the piece 'Crises' was first performed in the 1960s, and Cunningham addresses the differences between creating choreography for a smaller versus a larger group of dancers. (5:30) This is followed by a discussion of the costuming for the Event and the choices made by costumer Suzanne Gallo. (8:34) This is followed by a discussion of the painted backdrop created for the Eyespace performance by Brooklyn artist Henry Samelson.
