Sound quality is good. The recording is marred by "tape hiss," but the speakers' voices are clear and easily intelligible.
Description
Interview with Betty Lynd Thompson conducted by Pearl Atkinson on October 13, 1978 in Corvallis, Oregon, as an NDA [National Dance Association] oral history interview. Streaming file 1 (approximately 30 minutes). [Introductory remarks]. Betty Lynd Thompson, staff member at Oregon State University from 1927-1971, speaks with Pearl Atkinson about the beginnings of her career as a dance teacher including her teacher Margaret [Newell] D'Houbler; the concept of modern dance, then known as "natural dance," at the time; her training, with Martha Graham and Hanya Holm, and at Bennington College; bringing Martha Graham to Oregon in 1940 including the local response as well as Thompson's arranging of a performance for children; her dance classes at Oregon State College; her touring company; her book entitled: Fundamentals of rhythm and dance, with an analysis of the rhythmic approach in teaching dance skills (1933); the teaching manual she created based on her course syllabuses; Miriam Lidster.
