Biographical/historical: La Fonti (choreography, Joseph Mazilier; music, Théodore Labarre), a ballet-pantomime inspired by the real-life ballerina Amalia Fonti, was first presented at the Théâtre Imperial de l'Opéra, Paris, in 1855. The characters Zéphir and l'Amour, whose performers are not named in the ballet's published scenario, appeared in the second act ballet-within-a-ballet, in which the goddess Flore invokes Eros in an effort to capture the heart of the notoriously fickle Zéphir.
Biographical/historical: Alexandre Lacauchie was a French painter, engraver, and lithographer active in the mid-19th century. His numerous prints capture lively images of the dancers, actors, and singers of his time.
Biographical/historical: The printing and publishing house of Maison Martinet was founded in 1796 by Aaron Martinet, 1762-1841, who became well-known for publishing satirical prints. The series Galerie dramatique was published by Maison Martinet in ten volumes between 1844 and 1870.
Biographical/historical: Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of this print, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows.
Forms part of the Richard Park Beard collection. Graphics.
